Bookbinding canvases are primarily associated with classic book covers, dry embossing, and foil stamping. However, the development of digital printing technology has significantly expanded their marking capabilities.

One of the increasingly utilized methods is UV printing on bookbinding canvases. This technology allows for the application of full-color graphics, illustrations, photographs, texts, and visual identity elements onto the material's surface.

Models of notebooks prepared by JDR Technik demonstrate that UV printing can give traditional canvas a completely new character. The same technology can be used to create both a small logo and an elaborate, multicolored illustration that covers almost the entire surface of the cover.

 

 

What is UV printing?

 

In this article, by UV printing, we primarily understand direct UV ink printing on the surface of the canvas, most often performed on a flatbed printer. It is not about UV DTF transfer technology.

During printing, the ink is applied directly to the material and then cured with UV or UV-LED light. This ensures that the print is fixed during the device's operation and can be relatively quickly passed on for further processing.

Depending on the machine configuration, it is possible to print in CMYK colors, use white ink as an underprint, and create additional effects using clear varnish. If the ink adhesion to a specific surface is insufficient, some systems also allow for the application of a primer layer.

 

Why does UV printing fit well with bookbinding canvases?

 

The greatest advantage of this technology is the ability to combine the natural appearance of the fabric with full-color graphics.

Unlike prints made on smooth paper, the structure of the canvas remains visible. The weave, fibers, and texture of the material become part of the design. Therefore, the graphics do not have to completely cover the character of the substrate. They can work with it, resulting in a more individual effect.

 

UV printing allows for the creation of:

  • multicolored illustrations,

  • photographs and reproductions,

  • logos and corporate markings,

  • texts and typography,

  • short product series,

  • personalized covers,

  • prototypes and mock-ups before launching larger production runs.

 

Digital technology does not require preparing a separate matrix for each graphic, making it particularly useful for short series, variable projects, and the personalization of individual products. UV device manufacturers highlight this technology as a solution for specialized short runs, prototypes, packaging, and printing on various substrates.

 

The structure of the canvas affects the appearance of the print.

Bookbinding canvas is not a neutral surface. Each series can differ in:

  • thickness and density of the weave,

  • type of fibers,

  • presence of a paper carrier,

  • method of impregnation,

  • type of coating,

  • color of the material,

  • degree of gloss,

  • amount of protruding fibers.

 

The finer and more uniform the surface structure, the easier it is to reproduce small texts, thin lines, and fine details of illustrations.

On canvases with a pronounced weave, the print will appear more textile-like. Small elements may be partially broken up by the indentations between the fibers, but this effect can be the greatest advantage of the design.

Therefore, it is not always necessary to strive for a look identical to that on paper. In the case of canvas, it is worth using its structure as a conscious graphic element.

 

Balatex canvases and UV printing

 

Balatex Imperial

Imperial features a delicate, dense, and relatively smooth structure. Such a surface can be a good starting point for projects containing finer elements, lettering, logos, and more detailed illustrations.

The subtle structure of the material remains visible but does not dominate the print. Imperial can be an interesting choice for elegant notebooks, books, albums, chronicles, folders, and packaging with a representative character.

 

Balatex Savanna

The Savanna has a more visible, regular weave and a classic book canvas look. UV printing on this material retains a distinctly textile character.

Larger illustrations, botanical motifs, geometric patterns, graphic texts, and designs utilizing strong contrasts can look great on it. However, when it comes to very fine details, it should be noted that the texture of Savanna will have a greater impact on the image than a smoother canvas.

 

Balatex Natural and Coloret

Natural and Coloret are cotton canvases with a more traditional, artisanal appearance. The natural color of the substrate can slightly warm the print and give it a more organic character.

These materials can particularly work well with illustrations inspired by nature, art, handicrafts, traditional bookbinding, and eco-friendly projects.

In the case of printing without a white underlay, the color of the canvas will affect the appearance of the inks. This does not have to be a disadvantage. Sometimes, the slight penetration of the substrate's color allows for a more natural effect.

 

Balatex RAW

RAW features a thick, pronounced, and irregular weave. In this case, the structure of the material will be very visible even after printing.

Larger graphic elements, bold texts, simple illustrations, organic motifs, and designs that intentionally utilize the raw look of the fabric can work best. RAW may not be the first choice for very small texts and precise lines, but it can yield exceptional results where the character of the material is most important.

 

Balatex Mondial Metallic and Tulsa

Mondial Metallic and Tulsa have surfaces finished with an acrylic coating. Mondial additionally features a metallic effect, while Tulsa is designed for greater resistance to water, fats, and stains.

Such surfaces can create a very interesting combination with UV printing. In the case of metallic materials, one can also experiment with partial use of white underprinting. Areas printed without white can retain the gloss of the substrate, while areas with a white underprint can have more typical and saturated colors.

At the same time, the presence of the coating affects the adhesion of the ink. Therefore, Mondial and Tulsa require testing on a specific device, using the appropriate ink and curing settings.

 

Balatex Ottawa

Ottawa features a visible textile structure and a pastel color scheme. It can be a good choice for delicate projects, planners, albums, notebooks, diaries, and bindings with a calm, designer character.

The official descriptions of the Balatex series indicate significant differences between the surfaces of Imperial, Savanna, RAW, Tulsa, Mondial, Natural, Coloret, and Ottawa. That is why the printing result should always be evaluated on a specific material, not solely based on the technology name.

 

Wikitex Canvases and UV Printing

 

Wikitex Sail, Pearl Offset, and Tafta Offset

A natural starting point for UV printing trials can be materials whose surfaces have already been prepared for various printing methods.

Wikitex Sail can be printed using offset, digital, and screen printing. The paper carrier stabilizes the material and limits its stretching during processing.

There are also special materials in the offer: Sail Offset, Pearl Offset, and Tafta Offset. They differ in gloss level, fiber thickness, and surface structure. In the case of Tafta, the print works with shiny fibers, allowing the image to achieve a more three-dimensional character.

However, adapting the material for digital printing is not an automatic guarantee of compatibility with every UV ink. Testing on a specific machine is still necessary.

 

Wikitex Kalidos

Kalidos has a delicate structure, tonal color scheme, and a lightly coated and impregnated surface. The material is relatively smooth and pleasant to the touch.

Its irregular tonal transitions can become part of the design. However, it should be noted that the material does not have a completely uniform color, so in areas without a white underprint, it may subtly change the perception of the printed graphics.

 

Wikitex Kanafix

Kanafix is a cotton canvas without a paper carrier. The starch finish stabilizes the material from below and limits glue penetration, while the absence of paper allows for greater flexibility.

When printing UV, it should be determined whether the print will be done before covering the cardboard or already on the finished cover. The flexible material may require appropriate stabilization during printing.

 

Not every canvas will be equally easy to print on.

A good example is the classic Wikitex linen canvas. JDR Technik does not recommend its offset or digital printing due to fine, protruding fibers that may distort the image.

This does not automatically mean that any UV printing will be impossible. However, it is a clear signal that the suitability of the material should not be determined solely by its color. The surface structure is equally important.

Sail, Tafta Offset, Pearl Offset, Kanafix, Kalidos, Linen, Linen24, Velvet, and Bronze have different properties, so they should be assessed separately.

 

UV printing on light and dark canvas

The color of the material directly affects the appearance of the finished print.

On light canvas, CMYK colors can be applied directly to the surface. However, the substrate color will still subtly influence their perception.

On dark, heavily saturated, or metallic materials, a white underprint. The white layer limits the influence of the canvas color and allows for clearer, more saturated hues.

White ink can also be used selectively. It does not need to be placed under the entire graphic. Leaving selected areas without a white underprint allows for the use of the natural color, gloss, or texture of the material as part of the design.

UV systems allow for the preparation of a separate white layer, as well as the application of a primer in areas where the surface requires improved ink adhesion.

 

Should the canvas be printed before or after making the cover?

Both solutions are possible, but each requires different project preparation.

Printing the canvas before covering the cardboard

Printing the material before making the cover allows for working on a flat surface and makes it easier to arrange a larger number of items.

However, the project must take into account:

  • the size of the cardboard,

  • the width of the spine,

  • the locations of the joints,

  • the material folds,

  • the bleed on the edges,

  • the tolerance of the gluing process.

The print located in the folding area should also withstand bending of the material well.

 

Printing on the finished cover

Printing directly on the finished cover allows for very precise placement of the logo, text, or illustration. It also facilitates the production of single items and personalization.

However, the thickness of the cover and the shape of the spine must be taken into account. Important texts and small elements should not be placed too close to the joints, corners, or other areas that undergo significant movement when opening the book.

There is no one method suitable for every production. The choice should depend on the binding construction, the type of machine, and the method of further processing.

 

How to prepare graphics for UV printing on canvas?

When preparing the project, it is worth remembering a few rules:

  • photographs and raster graphics should be prepared at the appropriate resolution, usually around 250-300 ppi in the target format;

  • logos, text, and thin lines are best kept in vector format;

  • for dark materials, a separate layer of white underprint should be anticipated;

  • on canvases with a coarse weave, it is better to avoid very small letters and exceptionally thin lines;

  • the project should consider the direction of the weave and the position of the material on the cover;

  • when printing before gluing, appropriate bleeds should be added and folds should be taken into account;

  • before starting production, it is advisable to create a trial of the actual format, not just a small fragment of the graphic.

The more pronounced the texture of the canvas, the more significant the contrast, size of elements, and proper preparation of the white layer.

 

Why is a print trial necessary?

The information that the material is "suitable for UV printing" should not be treated as a universal guarantee of results.

The effect is influenced simultaneously by:

  • the specific model of the printer,

  • the type of ink used,

  • the flexibility of the cured layer,

  • the power and method of curing,

  • the presence of a white underprint,

  • the use of a primer,

  • the set amount of ink,

  • the type of coating and impregnation of the canvas,

  • the color and texture of a specific series.

The trial should be conducted on exactly the same material and color that will be used in production.

After printing, it is worth checking not only the appearance of the graphic but also its adhesion, resistance to abrasion, behavior during bending, durability at the joints, and the impact of the print on touch and surface characteristics.

The manufacturer of UV devices also anticipates the use of a primer in situations where the ink separates from a more difficult substrate. This shows that adhesion depends on the combination of material, ink, and printing parameters.

 

Does UV printing replace embossing?

UV printing does not have to replace traditional decoration methods. It can complement them.

On a single cover, you can combine:

  • full-color UV illustration,

  • foil-stamped logo,

  • dry embossing,

  • selective varnishing,

  • raised elements,

  • white ink printing.

An example could be a cover with a colorful illustration made using UV technology and a small logo embossed in gold foil. It is also possible to first print and then emboss selected elements.

The order of operations should be checked in advance, as the temperature and pressure used during embossing can affect the surface printed with UV ink.

 

Where can UV printing on canvas be used?

UV printing on bookbinding canvases can be applied in the production of:

  • books and collector's editions,

  • notebooks and planners,

  • book calendars,

  • photo albums,

  • chronicles and memorial books,

  • boxes and premium packaging,

  • menu cards,

  • company folders,

  • material samples,

  • short promotional series,

  • personalized products.

Balatex and Wikitex canvases are used for producing books, albums, notebooks, packaging, calendars, and other bookbinding products. UV printing expands their design possibilities but does not change the fundamental rule: the material should be chosen according to appearance, production technology, and later usage.

 

Summary

 

UV printing allows us to view bookbinding canvases not just as single-colored materials for classic bindings but also as a legitimate substrate for multi-colored graphics.

However, the best effect is not achieved by completely hiding the canvas structure. It is worth utilizing its weave, color, gloss, and natural character as part of the design.

Smooth canvases can better reproduce details. Clearly textured materials give the print a more textile and artisanal appearance. Bright colors facilitate achieving saturated hues, while on dark surfaces, a properly prepared white underprint is crucial.
