SPINE BOARD
CEO, JDR Technik sp. z o.o.
Spine board a foreign word to many, although I am also not sure it is the correct term. What is more Polish ? Alternatively, what is the correct name for a bookbinder ? Dorsal bobbin, shrenca are other names we come across depending on the region of the country. However, no matter how you look at it, we have become producers of "dorsal bobbin, bobbin, shrenca". Our range consists of three products with different weights. It may seem strange, but with us everything is different. We adapt to the customer, not the customer to us.
Looking below, you are probably asking yourself which product is the best or most popular. The answer is, there is no rule. The selection factor is the operator of the Kolbus DA, Horeauf, Rodas or similar machines and the type of production.
diameter approx. 50 cm
large winding approx. 50m
cardboard sleeces 3"
A new product in our range of bookbinding spines. It is the answer to the expectations of fine art printers. The product is made of very high quality cardboard. Very firmly glued which gives us quite a high stiffness, while maintaining a moderate cardboard thickness. The product is mainly used for the production of books with a small spine thickness. Commonly used in the production of children's books and notebooks. Used for spines under 2 cm. With this width, the cardboard is still cut nicely with circular knives on Kolbus DA. It does not delaminate during this process and does not "run away" from the knives. Top layer white coated, bottom white uncoated.
Winding: 289 mb
Roll diameter: 50 cm
Thickness: 630 µm
Weight: 400 g/m2
Stem: 3" cardboard sleeve
Widths available in stock: 20 mm
Other widths: minimum quantity 200 kg
A product that complements the GRV product due to its much higher grammage and thickness. For some art printers, this is the basic product, and they use only this product. It may seem too thick and stiff to everyone, but it is quite the opposite. A skilled team of bookbinders in fine art printing works can handle this product very well. They make thin, rounded and also thick spines. In return, they receive a high-quality cover and are obliged to purchase only one type of spine bobbin. The bobbin is smooth on both sides, grey, recycled paperboard.
Winding: 278 mb
Roll diameter: 50 cm
Thickness: 680 µm
Material: 500 g/m2

The spine board GRM comb is an alternative product to the spine board GRV comb, the main difference being its reduced thickness, which will be a disadvantage for some and an advantage for others. This product will work well when used for books with rounded spines. Even at a thickness of 10 cm, there will be no ribbing on the spine after rounding. If you decide to use this product, there is no point in relying on versatility and for straight spines you should use the GRL Spine board. Spine board GRM has a coated top layer and an uncoated white bottom layer.
Winding: 486 mb
Roll diameter: 50 cm
Thickness: 360 µm
Weight: 280 g/m2

This is the basic type of bookbinding spine bobbin. The most versatile product although with thick backs you have to make some quality concessions. However, it gives us the opportunity to use only one product. Above a width of 70 mm we recommend the use of alternative spines. A very good type of spine for book printing companies with a predominantly thin spine. The outer side of the spine is white smooth, uncoated. The inner side is slightly greyish rough. At the same time, it is a product that will not require good quality glue, as we have both sides of the cardboard easily absorbent.

Faced with all this literature, you are wondering what to actually choose ? Based on our experience, we can answer that you should use 3 products to maintain high quality. GRM (coated) or GRV (uncoated) for rounded book spines, GRL for straight book spines and if you have a problem with a very thin spine of less than 2 cm you need to go for a GRC spine. Of course, this is just our suggestion but in 80% of cases it works.
